Business Wire IndiaWith women becoming significant contributors in the Indian growth story, it has become extremely important for them to become financially secure. Their financial independence and management is of utmost importance because of the risks associated with changing economies, loss of job and financial crunch.

With different investment options open, it becomes easy for women to choose the plans that suit her requirements. These investments include real-estate, mutual funds, equity shares, and so on and so forth. While most of these depend heavily on stock market and are exposed to fluctuations, fixed deposits are one of the safest investment options that offer assured profits.

Bajaj Finserv, through its lending and investment arm Bajaj Finance Ltd. is offering 8.20 percent rate of interest on fixed deposits for women senior citizens for the tenure of 60 months on this Women’s Day. The company is also offering an interest rate of 8.10 percent to its existing female customers on cumulative FD for the same tenure.

For a fixed deposit ranging from one to five years, the company will offer an additional interest of 0.35% to all its patrons who are senior citizens. The existing female customers will receive an additional 0.25% on renewal of FDs.

While an existing investor will earn an interest of 8.35% upon renewal of FD, the senior citizens will earn an interest rate of 8.45%. These rates are applicable on a tenure of 60 months and the amount can be as low as Rs. 25,000.

With ‘FAAA/Stable’ rating by CRISIL and ‘MAAA (Stable)’ rating by IRCA, the company has been deemed with the highest degree of safety with regard to timely payment of interest and principal on the instrument.

Benefits of Fixed Deposits for Women

Stable returns
With a fixed deposit, the investor can hope for a fixed interest on the investment, with absolutely no effect of any market fluctuations.

Highly beneficial for women
With additional percentage of interest, women end up gaining more on the fixed deposits.

No Volatility
Fixed Deposits are bound by a pre-decided rate of interest. The investor ends up earning the amount, no matter how the stock market performs. This makes FDs one of the safest investment options.

Flexible Pay-out Options
Fixed deposits offer flexible pay out options in the way of cumulative and non-cumulative interest. This enables the investors to meet their short-term and long-term requirements.

Higher interest rates
It is always beneficial to save money in an FD as compared to the savings account because of higher rates of interest in fixed deposits.

Kymeta, along with partners Intelsat and Liberty Puerto Rico, traveled to 33 communities across Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, providing 22,266 internet sessions and 813.44GB data usage to impacted residents. (Photo: Business Wire)

Three Kymeta-enabled vehicles joined a disaster relief caravan that crisscrossed the island of Puerto Rico from October through December 2017*. The vehicles were equipped with Kymeta KyWay™ flat panel, beam-forming, electronically-steered satellite terminals. Despite the lack of any electrical power or cellular service, the low power-consuming terminals provided internet access using the vehicles to power the communications system.

“The tour provided communication capabilities for disaster relief efforts and brought high-speed connectivity to communities that were without power or communications for weeks,” said Naji Khoury, President, Liberty Puerto Rico. Overall, the Liberty Puerto Rico Wi-Fi Tour delivered 22,266 internet sessions and 813.44GB of data usage. “This internet access supported relief efforts in 33 communities, supporting public safety staff and helping residents access much-needed funds from pop-up ATMs, fill prescriptions and file 2,504 FEMA applications,” continued Khoury. “For many of the residents, it was also the first time they had the opportunity to communicate with friends and family since the hurricane.”

For Kymeta, providing much-needed communications in the wake of a disaster made sense.

“The Liberty Puerto Rico team has worked tirelessly over the last several months to provide some level of normalcy for the island,” said Nathan Kundtz, PhD., Founder, President and CEO, Kymeta. “Being without communications is one of the most common issues for residents, first responders and ongoing disaster relief efforts following a natural disaster.” Lack of communication is also the biggest roadblock to providing a fast and effective response to a natural disaster or an emergency. “Providing communications where it otherwise wouldn’t exist means limited resources can be sent where they will make the greatest impact,” said Kundtz. “We have been privileged to support the efforts in Puerto Rico.”

In addition to offering high-speed internet access, the tour concluded with 36,895 hot meals served and 4,213 medical services, including vaccinations, rendered.

*During the Liberty Puerto Rico Wi-Fi Tour, Kymeta and its partners visited 33 of the most significantly impacted communities across Puerto Rico: Corozal, Toa Baja, Comerio, Naranjito, Barranquitas, Naguabo, Vega Baja, Florida, Arecibo, Cayey, Humacao, Fajardo, Ceiba, Yabucoa, Guayama, Salinas, Utuado, Ciales, Orocovis, Jayuya, Villalba, Coamo, Juana Díaz, Santa Isabel, Maricao, Las Marías, Moca, Lares, Morovis, Aguas Buenas, Patillas, Maunabo and Yaucao.

About Kymeta

The world’s demand for ubiquitous mobile connectivity is irrefutable. A global, mobile network is the answer to connecting people and places that have never been connected before.

Kymeta is making seamless, always-connected mobile communications possible with a unique hybrid approach that enables satellite and cellular networks to together deliver a single, global, mobile network. End-to-end mobile communications are delivered with Kymeta KĀLO™ connectivity services, and the world’s first electronically-steered, flat panel satellite terminal that goes places traditional satellite dishes cannot. The Kymeta KyWay™ terminal makes high-throughput, mobile communications possible in cars, trains, buses, trucks, boats and much more.

If it moves, Kymeta keeps it connected.

Dr. Madhu Chitkara was part of the panel discussion on the topic “She Means Business” at TiECON Chandigarh 2018 on 9th March 2018. TiECON Chandigarh was aimed to create an energizing entrepreneurial environment for start-up founders to get inspired and take off. It brought together diverse, innovative and dynamic ventures and showcase an expert ecosystem that ignited entrepreneurial minds.

Along with Dr. Madhu Chitkara (Vice-Chancellor of Chitkara University), other members who were part of the exciting discussion were Priyanka Agarwal - CEO of Wishberry, Tanya Goyal - Executive Director of Mogae Consultants and Neetu Prabhakar - Mrs. India International 2017. The panel discussion started off on a general note of what are the issues that women come across in her road to entrepreneurship in India.

As a part of the panel discussion, Dr. Madhu Chitkara said, “At Chitkara University, the staff ratio women to men is in the aspect of 60:40 which proved to be a successful combination in the field of education. There is no discrimination or disliking of each other on a gender bias at a workplace as all of them are on a mission to achieve their goals and tasks. The word ‘women’ contains ‘men’, so it’s all about how good you are at work and liking or disliking between men and women does not arise.”

Speaking about her experience of becoming a woman entrepreneur, Dr. Madhu Chitkara said, “We being well-known academicians for a long time decided to start something of our own in 2002. With my husband being a strong academician, I have picked up the role of going to regulatory authorities to get the things going for our organization. It was tough feeling at that point of time for a woman to go after the government authorities to make things happen. I have decided to take this as a challenge and made it happen. In the process, I have learnt how to be patient and this experience I had initially is helping me run the university successfully today. Everything depends on your mindset.”

With some stats and facts which reciprocate the main discussion topic, Dr. Madhu Chitkara concluded saying, “At Chitkara University, we have about 130 patents filed and 70% of the patents were filed by women. Also, Chitkara University as a part of its corporate social responsibility adopted 5 villages and started training the women from these villages. 2000 women from these villages are now working in Chitkara University. Women stand for their work ethics and men bring in the willpower to get things done and their combination as a team has done wonders at Chitkara University. The stats revealed are in favour the topic being discussed – She Means Business.”

Business Wire IndiaIn a recent panel on parenting by SC Johnson’s brand All Out®, P. Gopichand spoke about his teaching style which influences how his students learn and perform. He spoke on how inspired he was by India’s rich gurukul culture and how Indians now having lost touch with that are trying to find their identity somewhere between an eastern culture and a western education.

On the topic of being a tough mom, he mentioned how even coaches have to choose between a tough and lenient approach. He was tempted to say he has been tough but as a coach, he chooses to put himself second and focus on what the student needs and stick with the best learning approach for them given what they want to learn.

Gopichand touched on this topic while speaking at a panel discussion titled #StandByToughMoms based on a brand film by All Out®. The film is going viral on social media and has already received more than 40 million views so far and is connecting with the audiences on a topic that is a taboo in Indian society – supporting women’s parenting decisions when it comes to raising their children.

Here is wishing him and his star students such as Saina Nehwal and P. V. Sindhu the best of luck and hopefully, they will get time to rest between all that shuttling about!

New Global Survey Points to Key Issues, Needs and Gaps in Fight to End Smoking

Business Wire India

The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World released findings from a global survey to better understand smokers, their experiences, and challenges they face when they try to quit smoking. The survey also highlights their awareness regarding the harm caused by smoking and how their perceptions of cigarettes, alternative products, and nicotine influence their motivation to move away from smoking. The data will shape the development of research to determine the best solutions to accelerate the end of smoking across diverse cultures and economic conditions.

Figure 1: Which of the following situations, if any, apply to you? (% - Top Three Answers per Country) (Graphic: Business Wire)

The 2018 State of Smoking Survey included 17,421 current smokers, ex-smokers, and non-smokers from 13 countries: Brazil, France, Greece, India, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, Malawi, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States. In parallel, a series of qualitative focus groups were carried out in seven countries (France, Greece, India, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States) to give additional context to the quantitative results. The survey was conducted by Kantar Public, an integrated consulting and research agency, which was engaged by the Foundation.

The primary findings are:

1. Smoking isn’t an isolated habit. Smokers consider it deeply integrated with their basic pleasures of life, such as eating, drinking, and socializing. Currently implemented cessation methods fail to take these into account, resulting in continued smoking.

2. Smokers know that smoking is harmful to their health, and many consider themselves in poorer health than non-smokers, yet they do not actively engage with their healthcare providers or discuss effective cessation or reduced-harm solutions with them. The healthcare system needs to better engage with smokers, and medical providers need more effective tools to help smokers quit.

3. There is confusion among smokers about the relative harms of smoking and less harmful alternatives. While people “smoke for the nicotine, but die from the tar,” there is still considerable misperception about the risks of nicotine. This impacts their motivation to quit or try reduced risk alternative products.

“I hope this survey will jolt many of the world’s one billion smokers into action to stop smoking, spark a meaningful discussion on the deeply complex reasons so many people continue to smoke, and make clear the urgent need to develop more effective communications and interventions to help smokers quit or substantially reduce their risks,” said Dr. Derek Yach, President of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World. “By better understanding key drivers behind why people start smoking, barriers to quitting, and motivations to stop, we can help reduce the negative health consequences for many who are trapped in the cycle of addiction to combustible tobacco products.”

Specific findings from the global survey include:

  • Smoking is closely associated with daily rituals and routines like waking up, meal time, coffee/tea breaks, and socializing. In some countries (such as Brazil, Greece, and Lebanon), cigarettes are often smoked with coffee or tea, and in many others, cigarettes are commonly smoked after meals. (See figure 1)
  • In most countries, there was a significant desire to quit smoking. (See figure 2)
  • Most smokers polled recognize that smoking is harmful to their health and self-report as being less healthy than non-smokers, yet they visit their healthcare providers less frequently than non-smokers. (See figures 3 and 4)
  • The main driver that motivates smokers to quit or consider quitting is mainly their concern about their personal health. (See figure 5)
  • Although a large majority of smokers surveyed tried quitting without assistance, those that sought assistance often switched to nicotine-replacement therapy and prescription medicines first. In some countries (i.e., France, Greece, Japan, Lebanon, New Zealand, Russia, UK, US), smokers reported using e-cigarettes and other nicotine replacement devices to cut down or quit smoking cigarettes. (See figure 6)

Further findings from this study are available at: https://www.smokefreeworld.org/sites/default/files/uploads/derek-yach-press-conference-presentation.pdf. High resolution images of the graphics are available at: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0bw9ckaac0h7cu9/AAB1ihaAu9Ilr_aFdaxZq60ia?dl=0.

“The data demonstrates that by better understanding the unique experiences and struggles of the individual smoker, we can better support each individual’s quit journey,” said Dr. Yach. “In this age of personalized medicine, it is only logical that we should stop treating the world’s smokers as one homogeneous group and start developing and embracing a wide range of solutions that allow individual smokers to select the method that works best for his or her situation and, more importantly, reduce the harm, disease, and death that is caused by smoking.”

Procter & Gamble’s (P&G) non-profit Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program and National Geographic are raising awareness about the global water crisis with the release of a new documentary and national survey in conjunction with World Water Day. The documentary, titled “The Power of Clean Water,” follows the lives of three women and their families, providing a first-hand perspective on the daily challenges of accessing clean drinking water. P&G conducted a survey* to understand Americans' level of awareness and concern with the global water crisis and its effects. (Graphic: Business Wire)

Global awareness of the water crisis is growing, but in the U.S., many are still unaware of how many people struggle with the daily reality of not having access to clean water, something P&G sought to explore by commissioning a new survey to be released along with the documentary. Survey findings show that most consumers are concerned about the safety of their drinking water, but do not know that approximately 1 in 10 people around the world lack access to clean drinking water. In addition, one-in-four underestimate the number of people who die each year because of waterborne illnesses.

Survey findings further highlighted that Americans are largely unaware of the progress that has been made to date to address the global water crisis. Nearly 70 percent of respondents believe that the crisis has stayed the same or gotten worse, with almost one in four saying that the problem has become much worse. In reality, the global effort to solve the crisis is working. 2.6 billion people have gained access to clean water in the last 25 years but there are still 844 million people yet to reach.

P&G’s Chief Brand Officer, Marc Pritchard, shared the survey findings today in advance of the first screening of “The Power of Clean Water” on March 21. “In some parts of the world, we take for granted the availability of clean water. People in countries like Mexico, Indonesia and Kenya struggle with finding clean water to drink. And without clean drinking water, it’s much harder to keep their children healthy, have them get an education and provide a better life for their families,” Pritchard said. “Our goal, in partnering with National Geographic, is to share these stories about the power of clean water and to inspire others to make a difference and become a part of the solution.”

“At National Geographic, we believe that great storytelling can spark curiosity, help solve big problems, and push the boundaries of what we already know,” said Jill Cress, chief marketing officer of National Geographic Partners. “This documentary reflects the very real and powerful stories of people whose lives have been impacted by programs that provide access to clean drinking water, and we are proud to join P&G to continue to drive awareness around this pressing issue and reach others in need.”

The P&G CSDW Program, which started in 2004, works with more than 150 partners and organizations to provide water purification technology to communities that lack clean drinking water. To date, the CSDW Program has delivered more than 13 billion liters of clean water to people who need it most.

Business Wire India

FLIR Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: FLIR) today announced the launch of the FLIR ThermiCam V2X, a thermal traffic sensor for the emerging vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology market. The FLIR V2X-enabled traffic sensor for urban traffic will allow vehicles and traffic infrastructure to communicate and share data in a system that aims to improve motorist, pedestrian, and bicyclist safety and efficiency.

FLIR ThermiCam V2X thermal traffic sensor designed for the emerging vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology market will communicate with V2X-equipped vehicles. (Photo: Business Wire)

V2X technology is an emerging crash avoidance system that relies on the communication of information between nearby vehicles and traffic infrastructure to warn drivers about potentially dangerous situations. In a V2X system, both the vehicles and infrastructure have communication units installed to transmit information. The FLIR ThermiCam V2X mounts on existing traffic signals and detects vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists at intersections using thermal imaging data. Utilizing dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) technology, vehicles transmit real-time speed and direction data, while the ThermiCam V2X communicates the presence of pedestrians and bicyclists, along with data from other vehicles.

The ThermiCam V2X can prioritize traffic signaling at busy intersections and arterial roads for emergency and public transport vehicles, ultimately improving traffic flow and safety for all drivers. Also, because the ThermiCam connects with existing city traffic systems, city traffic planners can future-proof traffic infrastructure and avoid major investments in retrofitting technology.

“As car manufacturers design V2X technology into future vehicles, FLIR technology is being deployed today to ensure cities are ready for their arrival,” said James Cannon, President and CEO of FLIR. “By detecting pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles in real time, while also enabling communication between vehicles and traffic infrastructure, FLIR ThermiCam V2X will play a critical role in improving the movement and safety of the world’s roadways.”

FLIR will demonstrate the ThermiCam V2X sensor at Intertraffic 2018 in Amsterdam at booth #10.403, from March 20–23, 2018. The product is available for testing today, with general availability starting in the second half of 2018. Accenture (NYSE: ACN) and Grameen Foundation India have collaborated to develop two new applications that help overcome the barriers to financial services adoption among women and other low-income populations in India. Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, the applications help users better understand financial products and services, enabling them to make informed choices that positively impact their financial and social well-being. Grameen Foundation India plans to roll out the applications across 300 villages in the states of Maharashtra and Odisha.

“This is a tremendous example of how technology can help bridge the vast cultural and educational divide in places like India, having a real impact on the way people work and live,” said Sanjay Podder, managing director, Accenture Labs India. “Our collaboration with Grameen Foundation India is part of our Tech4Good initiative to apply disruptive technologies in new and unique ways to address complex social challenges.”

“Access to financial services gives women greater control over their lives, enabling them to start small businesses, invest in their local communities, and better cope with crises. But barriers - ranging from illiteracy to a lack of bank branches in rural areas, coupled with a lack of confidence and access to information - hinder adoption for millions of low-income women in India,” said Prabhat Labh, CEO, Grameen Foundation India. “The breakthrough use of these new technologies will enable Grameen Foundation India to work even more effectively for the economic empowerment of women.”

Accenture Labs in Bangalore began working with Grameen Foundation India last year as part of its broader corporate citizenship focus on using Tech4Good. Leveraging its expertise in emerging technologies - including AI, AR, speech recognition and computer vision - coupled with Grameen Foundation’s expertise in human-centric design and e-learning to solve the problems of poverty, two applications were developed:
  • Emotional Analytics for Social Enterprises (EASE) – an AI-based web and mobile app that helps microfinance advisors gain real-time insights on the emotional and cognitive status of their clients, based on video and audio inputs. Helping to improve cross-cultural communication, the tool provides deeper insights on precisely what topics or keywords attract attention, or cause clients to disengage. For instance, the tool could help detect whether a woman applying for a loan is being pressured to do so by someone else - making it an unnecessary burden, or whether she would find it to be of genuine use.

  • Grameen Guru – a smartphone-based multi-lingual chatbot that leverages AR technology to help clients who can’t read understand written materials. Using the app, a user can hold their phone over a brochure that details available financing options, for example, and the Guru virtual assistant will pop up and prompt a conversation in the local language to explain the material. The intuitive interface and simplicity of use makes it accessible to people with a wide range of abilities and can result in better engagement.
“Our mission is to empower the poor – especially women – to end hunger and poverty by creating breakthrough solutions that leverage digital technology and our local partner networks to bring people the tools and opportunities they need to help themselves,” said Steve Hollingworth, CEO, Grameen Foundation. “Working with Accenture Labs enabled us to take advantage of cutting edge technologies to create entirely new solutions for financial education and financial inclusion.”

The new applications build on Grameen Foundation India’s successful implementation of its new e-learning platform, G-LEAP, which is being used by more than 1,000 frontline microfinance workers who have trained and equipped over 58,000 women beneficiaries to use digital financial services. These women perform digital transactions worth over a crore of rupees (Indian Rupees ten million) each month.About Accenture
