    About Lung Care Foundation

In view of the rapidly deteriorating lung health due to alarming air pollution, Lung Care Foundation was set up as a not-for-profit organisation on 25th May, 2015 at New Delhi. The present levels of pollution are a serious threat to our Lung Health.

In the WHO’s list of 20 top most polluted cities of the world, 17 cities are Indian. The pollution level in our metros is already making the air unfit for human consumption with such serious threat to our Lung Health.

There is a need for an organisation like Lung Care Foundation. The foundation proposes to “touch all” (irrespective of their paying capacity) to ensure ‘Healthy Happy Lungs’.

The Foundation is working to achieve its aims by three means namely Education, Research and Clinical Care.

About Prof. Dr. Arvind Kumar, Founder & Managing Trustee, Lung Care Foundation

Prof. (Dr.) Arvind Kumar is a leading Thoracic Surgeon who has been practicing Chest Surgery for the last 35 years. He has been a witness to changing colour of the lungs of people over the years. When he operated patients with lung diseases in the 1980s, colour of the lungs of a non-smoker in urban India was found to be pink whereas black spotted lungs were typically found to be only among the smokers.

However, now after 35 years and countless Chest Surgeries later, he is observing a shocking site wherein lungs of most of the residents of urban areas like Delhi resemble smoker’s lungs. The site upset him severely and he kept talking about it to others.

Dr. Kumar thought that since he has been a witness to this unfortunate change (that others can’t see), it is his duty to share this information with all the countrymen and work for the ‘Care of 2.5 billion Lungs in India’. He shared this vision with Mr. Rajiv Khurana, Dr. Belal Bin Asaf and Mr. Abhishek Kumar and this was the beginning of ‘Lung Care Foundation’.

Mr. Rajiv Khurana, CMC, FIMC Founder Trustee, Lung Care Foundation

Mr. Rajiv Khurana, is the CEO & Founder, The Personnel Lab; Founder, RETYREMENT and Founder & Managing Trustee, International Consulting Professionals’ Institute (ICPI). Business Wire IndiaEven five years after Delhi's Nirbhaya gangrape case that shook the nation, crimes against women continue to be on the rise and convictions remain dismally low. According to NCRB, last year saw the conviction rate in crimes against women fall to 18.9% - the lowest in a decade. Moreover, only one in every four rape cases resulted in conviction!

Swati Maliwal, Chairperson, Delhi Commission for Women said, "Between 2012 and 2014, Delhi Police registered 31,446 cases for crime against women but less than 150 convictions were made. Criminals are not scared anymore. This needs to change. There is a dire need to strengthen investigative and forensic infrastructure in the city."

While DNA evidence was key in proving the guilt of Nirbhaya's perpetrators beyond doubt, majority of the victims in cases of rape and violence against women continue to be denied scientific investigations based on DNA forensics.

Internationally, DNA forensics is used as a standard operating procedure in crimes against women. However, not enough DNA is being 'collected', 'tested' and 'compared' in crime scenes in India, which amounts to poor conviction, very high pendency rate and resulting huge backlogs. GTH estimates, that the United Kingdom, has over 60,000 DNA tests completed for crime scenes annually, while in India, with a population thirteen times greater, crime labs are able to complete only 7,500 cases annually.

According to Tim Schellberg, President, Gordon Thomas Honeywell-Governmental Affairs, "Across the world, it has been found that perpetrators are much more likely to plead guilty when DNA forensics are used, and the convictions are much higher than without DNA forensics, saving the court and the police time and resources."

Addressing the issue today, in a move to create a wider public opinion, Shakthi Vahini, an NGO fighting crime against women and children, organized a daylong forum on strengthening investigative procedures for sexual assault and rape cases in India. The panel discussed crucial forensic techniques which are missing with investigative agencies, lack of proper training in handling evidence, compulsory collection of DNA evidence in sexual assault cases against women and underfunded forensic labs.

Ravi Kant, Senior Advocate at Supreme Court and President of Shakti Vahni said, "If India has to send a strong message to criminals and instil in them the fear of law, we have to ensure that evidence collection is strengthened. Crime scenes must be protected, crucial evidences collected, scientifically examined & analysed. We need to realise that DNA profiling offers one of the most reliable forensic tools in solving cases of sexual assault and rape."

Section 164A of the Indian Code of Criminal Procedure mandates collection of human material from the victim for forensic testing. In several instances, the courts have also ordered for DNA testing to arrive at a judgement, particularly in cases of rape. However, considering the high crime rate, low conviction rate and prolonged trials, it appears that DNA testing is being carried out in only a small number of cases. As a result, rape and murder offenders are escaping conviction and the innocent are being wrongly punished.

Senior Advocate at Delhi High Court, Vivek Sood, said, "Fair and competent investigation in a criminal case is the backbone of criminal justice in any society. Collection of DNA evidence is equally important from the perspective of the prosecution and the defence. Hence, collection of DNA evidence, in appropriate cases can be said to be following Article 21 of the Constitution of India which guarantees to every person the fundamental right to life and liberty."

    • Merck Foundation evaluates the economic and social impact of ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ program on infertile women groups in Uganda
Merck Foundation, a non-profit organization and a subsidiary of Merck KGaA Germany, and Uganda Ministry of Health continue their commitment towards childless women Through ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ campaign in the heart of Africa. Merck Foundation evaluated the social and economic impact of ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ on childless women in Uganda and encouraged them to continue leading an independent and happier life.

In 2016, Merck Foundation in partnership with Uganda Ministry of Health had started ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ Campaign In the country with the aim to raise awareness about infertility prevention and management, build fertility care capacity and break the stigma around infertile women. They established various income generating projects to support infertile women across the country with the aim of empowering them socially and economically. The business set by Merck Foundation has benefitted over 800 women across Uganda.

“The childless women groups we created in each village are doing a great job. I remember last year they had no purpose in life, no respect from their community and no source of income. Today they have a bank account and a steady monthly income; now they are much happier and stronger.” Explained Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO Merck Foundation.

“For me, it’s essential to frequently visit ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ heroines across Africa to influence their transformation. The base of change in these villages is remarkable, and with our efforts and passion this change will be sustainable.” She further emphasized.

During the event, Hon. Sarah Opendi, Minister of State of Health, Uganda said, “The journey that Merck Foundation has started is a very special journey that has touched the lives of women who have been forgotten in the communities. It has touched not only women but also the lives of men who have been mistreating their women thinking that infertility is an issue of women, not know that 50% infertility is due to the malefactor. I want to thank Merck Foundation for thinking about these women.”

"I feel grateful and honored to be a part of the joy and happiness of these amazing women, who suffered the infertility stigma all their lives. I am glad that the efforts of 'Merck More Than a Mother' paid off. Now, these women are independent and getting the respect and support they deserved from the community." Dr. Rasha Kelej added.

About 'Merck More Than a Mother' campaign; In many Cultures, childless women suffer discrimination, stigma, and ostracism. Their inability to have children results in great isolation, disinheritance, and assaults. 'Merck More Than a Mother' empowers such women through the access to information, health, change of mindsets and economic empowerment.

Merck Foundation provided for more than 40 candidates, three months to six months clinical and practical training for fertility Specialists and embryologists in more than 15 countries across Africa and Asia.

Merck Foundation is making history in many African countries where they never had fertility specialists or training facilities before ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ intervention to train the first Fertility specialists such as; in Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Niger, Chad, and Guinea.

Merck Foundation plan supported the establishment of the first public IVF in Ethiopia through providing the clinical and practical training necessary for their staff. Merck Foundation also plans to support the establishment of the first public IVF in Tanzania soon.

The breakout sessions are full-day working meetings structured for shared learning on existing Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS) – collaborative, evidence-based processes that show results in patient safety – and for developing new APSS. These sessions provide healthcare professionals, advocates, and enthusiasts the opportunity to contribute their experiences and expertise, which is critical to process improvement, while also promoting transparency and encouraging aligned incentives that will eventually lead to ZERO preventable patient deaths in hospitals by 2020.

The World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit, and Breakout Sessions are supported by the Rt. Hon Jeremy Hunt, MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Department of Health United Kingdom and co-convened by the European Society of Anaesthesiology. This year’s breakout sessions will include:

    Session I

    Vaccine Safety

Many healthcare institutions can improve patient safety through procedures related to immunization, safety monitoring, and pertinent participatory information systems. This session will exchange the latest advances in patient and vaccine safety research methods, and pertinent key performance indicators for healthcare institutions. Finally, the group will crystallize the plans for developing an Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS) that focuses on safeguarding patients through engagement, protecting the providers caring for patients, and shielding at-risk patients. Other key topics of discussion will include systematic monitoring of adverse events and feedback knowledge updates for healthcare providers.

    Person and Family Engagement (PFE)

Person and Family Engagement is an underused “natural resource” for improving patient safety. Ample evidence has accumulated which demonstrates that when patients are actively engaged partners, they achieve better outcomes and help produce innovative solutions. Persons who use care or manage its use for loved ones are highly motivated to partner with professional and organizational care providers to drive change across the care continuum. Their experiences bring an urgency to the patient safety movement that propels action by generating empathy – they engage our hearts as well as our minds and hands.

    Falls

Injuries related to falls impose a catastrophic cost of care on families and healthcare economics. Fall prevention and injury reduction require a collaborative approach involving leadership, clinical intervention, and patent and family partnership. This session will explore the Actionable Patient Safety Solutions for Fall Prevention and Injury Reduction. The latest research and science will be discussed along with revisions to the APSS that can assist in care that reduces harm, injury, and death.

Driving Sustainable Change in Hand Hygiene - The Problem We Only THINK We Solved

If hand hygiene is the most effective way to prevent avoidable HAIs, why is global compliance below 50%? Recent studies prove that three elements are essential for sustainable improvement: Accurate measurement, evidence-based feedback, and top-down accountability. The current hand hygiene APSS incorporates this learning into actionable guidelines. Attendees will learn how to translate emerging science into action by providing input into the APSS through sharing experience & knowledge.

    Session II

    Reducing Unnecessary C-Sections

One of the life-altering procedures of modern obstetrics is the performance of an appropriately timed and executed cesarean delivery and yet over performance can lead to short and long-term complications and maternal deaths. In parts of the world increased cesarean section rates are associated with rising maternal mortality rates. Therefore, the avoidance of performing unnecessary cesarean births has become an important long-term strategy in reducing maternal mortality.

    Sepsis

Sepsis is a growing issue worldwide. This session will review and discuss the latest APSS #9A: Early Detection & Treatment of Sepsis for High-income Countries and the new APSS #9B: Early Detection & Treatment of Sepsis for Low and Middle-income Countries. Participants will share ideas and make suggestions to improve the APSS based on their knowledge and experience. The goal of the working group session is to facilitate revisions that increase APSS effectiveness and identify ways to disseminate APSSs more widely.

    Drug Shortages

Should drug shortages be viewed as a patient safety issue? That is one of the issues the working group will tackle in this session. Pharmaceutical shortages have a profound effect on clinical practice and patient outcomes and increase health care costs. The objectives of the session are to understand the reasons for drug shortages and define alternatives for shortage prevention and mitigation. Participants will also discuss the role of technology in coming up with solutions.

    About Patient Safety Movement Foundation:

More than 200,000 U.S. patients and three million worldwide die each year from preventable causes. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF) was established through the support of the Masimo Foundation for Ethics, Innovation, and Competition in Healthcare to reduce that number of preventable deaths to zero by 2020 (0X2020). Improving patient safety requires a collaborative effort from all stakeholders, including patients, healthcare providers, medical technology companies, government, employers, and private payers. The PSMF works with all stakeholders to address problems with actionable solutions. The Foundation also convenes the World Patient Safety, Science and Technology Summit bringing together some of the world’s best minds for thought-provoking discussions and new ideas that challenge the status quo. By presenting specific, high-impact solutions to meet patient safety challenges, called Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, encouraging medical technology companies to share the data their products are purchased for, and asking hospitals to make commitments to implement Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, the Patient Safety Movement Foundation is working toward zero preventable deaths by 2020.
